Small world

“A scout is clean” is one of our scout laws; however I have to confess that sometimes it is a real challenge to practice it. Like other leaders who are Lien Doan Truong and Staff members at the same time, I am here at TT9 and my schedule is full of activities from dust to dawn. In order to allow myself a shower once a day, which is almost a “luxury” here, I am very determined to stay up late like after midnight, or to get up early like at 4:00 or 5:00 AM to avoid the long waiting lines.
As usual, this morning I woke up before 5:00 o’clock and hurried to the bathroom. When I arrived, a few girls had already been there ahead of me. Some of them were taking  shower and two of them were standing in there waiting… Of course, I decided to stay and wait for my turn. The door opened, and another girl came in to make line after me. That was a teenager who looked somehow familiar to me; especially with her eyeglasses. The portable bathroom was small as you know, and I did not feel comfortable at all sharing that tiny space with 3 other people. Unfortunately, I could not do anything else beside standing there and listening to the girls’ conversation.

One girl asked another: “Did you come from abroad?” The other replied: “No, I’m from South California. How about you?” The first girl said: “I’m from Canada.” When I heard that, I joined their conversation out-of curiosity: “Are you a girl scout in Lien Doan Viet Nam in Montreal?  How long have you been with them?” The girl said: “Yes. I’ve been with them for 5 years.” - “What’s your name, please?” –“My name is Colette Nguyen Khanh Linh.” At this moment, I could not control my thoughts anymore, and out of joy, I told her: “Then I bet I already met you at the Lien Doan Viet Nam’s 25th Year Anniversary in Montreal. It was 4 years ago when I went there to attend Truong Nguyen Trung Thoai’s funeral in October 2005. I met you at the party that evening. You were with your parents and you wore a green Canadian uniform. You came over to welcome me and you shared with me a lot of stories. We did take some pictures together and I’ve still kept them in my special scout albums.”

No need to add more details since you already knew what would happen next. Colette Khanh Linh Nguyen and I were speechless. We just stood there hugging each other and thanking TT9 for bringing us together again in this small world…
